For anybody who wishes to move to the United States as a permanent resident, they must have a green card. A green card allows a person to legally reside and work in the United States. There are a couple of different ways to apply for a green card.

In some cases, an investor can obtain a green card. There are special situations like political asylum, and the green card lottery that a person may be eligible for.
Obtaining a green card is the first step in becoming an American citizen. After living and working in the United States for five years, a person can start the process. For those that are here under the political asylum act, they may only need to wait four years to start the citizenship process.
A person may lose their status if they violate any of the requirements that are attached to the green card. Some felonies can result in a person losing their status. A person who is in the United States with a green card, must carry the green card at them at all times.
